In solidarity with the fight to Defend the Atlanta Forest and in memory of Tortuguita, a mural was painted this week in Zapatista controlled territory in the mountains of Chiapas. This mural joins the tradition of other paintings at Caracol Oventik, which memorialize those fighting for the liberation of land and people everywhere.
It reads:
“ TORTUGUITA VIVE, LA LUCHA SIGUE”
(In Spanish) “In memory of Tortuguita, who was assassinated by the police on January 18, 2023 while fighting to defend the Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta, GA, USA against the construction of a massive police training facility “Cop City” and a giant movie lot “Hollywood Dystopia.” Since their murder, over 30 Forest defenders have been arrested and charged with domestic terrorism and denied bail. As our comrades sit in jail, the fight continues – May 2023”
“COP CITY WILL NEVER BE BUILT”
“YA BASTA”
(In Batsi K’op)
“Li Tortuguita kuxul, Li pas k’op yakal “
Tortuguita vive, la lucha sigue. Free them all, stop cop city.
