A “cybersecurity incident” that caused a widespread system outage Sunday is still impacting several Fulton County government services on Tuesday.
Here is what we know:
- Several Fulton County government services have been impacted. Impacts include court records, motor vehicle renewals by kiosk, property tax transactions, marriage licenses, firearms licenses and public computer use at libraries.
- Fulton County officials said the outage was due to a “cybersecurity incident.” As of early Tuesday afternoon, county officials have not said what the incident was or what caused it.
- The outage is also affecting the county’s phone system and most offices are not able to accept phone calls.
- The Fulton County Tax Commissioner’s office in downtown Atlanta was closed Monday because of the outage.
- Odyssey court records at one point said the system could be down until February 5, but they were later updated to remove the timetable.
- The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged that their operations are impacted too, with several systems failing to perform online and automated processes, which are now having to be done manually.
- “If it’s related to a ransomware event, it could easily be weeks, if not months,” Kelley said. “There were some systems in the City of Atlanta during that breach [the 2018 cyber-attack on the Georgia State Patrol] were never restored.”
- Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robb Pitts said at this time, the county is “not aware of any transfer of information about citizens or employees.”
